Health Department Squeezes Orange

If you've ever waited in line on the sidewalk outside of this place on a Sunday morning, just to get a warm yogurt served to you with dirty hands, you may feel slightly foolish at this time.

Food at Unsafe Temperatures, Poor Hand Washing

A North Side restaurant was shut down earlier today when inspectors from the Chicago Department of Public Health (CPDH) found multiple health code violations.

Orange, 3231 N. Clark, was cited for three faulty reach-in coolers found at 50, 59 and 61 degrees Fahrenheit, considerably warmer than the required 40 degrees or colder.

Food inside the coolers was also found at unsafe temperatures. CDPH inspectors ordered and supervised the discarding of about 30 pounds of food, including eggs, sausage, sliced ham, sliced cantaloupe and watermelon, milk, yogurt, and blue, brie and mozzarella cheese.

Additionally, the restaurant was ticketed for failing to have a hand washing sink in a basement food preparation area, and for using a hand washing sink on the first floor for food preparation and for washing utensils.

CDPH inspectors also found no certified food manager on duty.

Today’s visit was a routine, unannounced inspection.

The enforcement action was the 133rd time in 2009 that Health Department inspectors have shut a food establishment for health code violations.

Representatives of Orange will have an opportunity to explain themselves at an administrative hearing on September 17 and pay a fine expected to total $3,000.

Chicagoans who believe that a restaurant or other food establishment is operating in an unsafe manner are encouraged to dial 311 and report it.

Yeesh. I ate there once, over a year ago. It was alright, but nowhere near as fantastic as how it was described to me when it was suggested.
