Found Poem (Meek Deals)

Now batting for the Yankees:
number 2,
Derek
Jeter.
Number 2.

And that
brings up
Jeter.

Well the script is there
the last page is in Derek’s hands.

Meek deals.

Base hit to right field.
Here comes Richardson.
Here’s the throw from Markakis.
Richardson is safe.

Derek Jeter
ends his final game with a walk-off single.
Derek Jeter
where fantasy becomes reality
did you have any doubt?

I have memorized this clip.

I never saw it live.

Never particularly rooted for the Yankees or Jeter.

But this clip is something I look at maybe once a month.

It reminds me that I have to do my job, whatever it is, on any given day in any given situation.

Day one, day last, the World Series, an inconsequential end of season.

His at-bat was announced by a dead man, Bob Shepard, whose voice was heard for the last time on that night.

Greatness exists, and I memorized this call to make sure I know.
